Work you can see

We do not publish numbers we cannot stand behind. What we can show is the work itself — ongoing, community-led, and visible from the ridge above the valley.

Climate & Land Restoration2019 — ongoing

The Valley Turns Green

SUREWA's founding work: community-led restoration that has brought acacia cover and vegetation back to a valley once defined by bare ground.

When SUREWA formed in 2019, the Suguta Valley's bare, scant vegetation was both a symptom and a cause of hardship. The community's response was direct: protect regrowth, restore degraded ground, and manage grazing so the land could heal.

Today, acacia trees bloom green across the valley. The transformation is the foundation for everything else — water retention, browse for livestock, and proof to every resident that change led by the community endures.

Water2019 — ongoing

Water Advocacy & Delivery

From community advocacy for fair water allocation to practical improvement of supply points across the valley.

Water sits at the centre of life — and of insecurity — in the Suguta Valley. SUREWA works on both sides of the problem: advocating with county government and duty-bearers for the valley's fair share of water investment, and working with communities to deliver and improve the supply points households depend on.

Improved water access changes everything downstream: health, time for school and work, and the possibility of irrigation for food security.

Civic Engagement2019 — ongoing

A Voice in County Government

Barazas and civic forums that carry the valley's own priorities to the leaders and offices that decide.

SUREWA's civic engagement work ensures the valley's priorities are set by the valley. Through regular community meetings and organised engagement with leaders and county offices, residents present agreed priorities — water, land, schools — in one voice.

Growing into an organised community-based organisation has strengthened that voice further, giving the community's advocacy an institutional standing it did not have before.

New projects are agreed in community forums each season. Partners are welcome at the table.
